The Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg Frankfurt am Main is responsible for the collection period 1801-1870.
The Library was founded on 1.1. 2005 after the Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt am Main fused with the Senckenbergische Bibliothek. Both libraries functioned as university libraries beforehand: the Senckenbergische Bibliothek was responsible for the natural sciences; the Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek for the remaining subjects. The histories of both libraries have developed over the centuries. The Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek originated from the Ratsbibliothek of the City of Frankfurt am Main (in the 15th century); the Senckenbergische Bibliothek was founded in 1763 by Johann Christian Senckenberg, the Frankfurt medical doctor, after whom the library is named today.
Collection period 1801 - 1870
The Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg merged as a result of the fusion between the Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt am Main and the Senckenbergische Bibliothek. As libraries of the former imperial free city they both reflect the historical inheritance from the citizen's culture of the Empire. The libraries are grateful to the cultural tradition of the City of Frankfurt, its civic donators and societies, who have contributed to the extent and variety of the historical collections. These stocks form the historical basis for the Sammlung Deutscher Drucke.
In the 19th century there was an immense increase in the production of books. Mass production influenced the procedure for paper-making; since then the problem of deterioration of books through acidity has developed.
The aim of the collection is to develop the whole breadth of the disciplines. Prints, which have hitherto not been available in German libraries, are predominantly acquired. Furthermore, Frankfurt Prints are collected, which are not in the library.
Cataloguing
All titles of books and journals acquired within the scope of the Sammlung Deutscher Drucke (Collection of German Prints) can be accessed in the online catalogue. Furthermore all the titles of collection's journals are accessible in the journals database (Zeitschriftendatenbank, ZDB).
A large part of the prints from the 1801 - 1870 period belongs to the old stocks of the library. The old alphabetical card catalogue has been retro-digitalized and is accessible online. Both catalogues can be accessed via the Frankfurt Catalogue Portal. A list of list of new acquisitions can also be generated.
The Frankfurt University Library is digitizing all its SDD-acquisitions as from 2015 and enabling access via the Digital Collections-Website and the Frankfurt Catalogue Portal.
